I finally discovered that the data I wanted is in enhanced mode-s message type BDS2.0.

So, problem solved.

I puzzled by how VRS looks up the operator for a flight. For example the Aer Lingus flight with callsign STK5ED when I look it up using the RouteView in basestation.sqb it tells me the operator is Stobart Air. Stobart Air is the holding company which owns Aer Lingus. Frustratingly VRS gets it right ...

I'm trying to understand how VRS and other programs are able to find and display the callsign (flightID) for aircraft which are not equipped with ADS-B. LoganAir for example runs a number of small aircraft which do not seem to be equipped with ADS-B, (they certainly don't transmit postition etc and ...
