Vertical Speed for Mode-S

The "to-do" list for Virtual Radar Server is as long as my arm, but if you want to pile more work onto it then this is for you.

Vertical Speed for Mode-S

Post by Vraz » Wed Aug 31, 2016 4:31 am

Is there any deliberate reason that VRS (and other 1090 visualization software) does not calculate the vertical speed for non-ADS aircraft? The altitude is provided via DF0 and vertical rate appears a trivial calculation. I could synthesize at the receiver software level and inject, but seems like suplementary calculations should occur at the visualization layer. Was this a deliberate ommision or something worth adding to the legs length backlog? Thanks.

VRS just reports the values coming from the transponder. It could calculate the vertical speed but I suspect it's going to get a bit unrealistic when messages are many seconds apart.
