For those interested in having MLAT capability with VRS, I suddenly found my VRS displaying a large number of aircraft that I have never seen before. I could tell it was MLAT tracking by the sometimes rough tail of a flight track. I had been thinking that VRS had somehow self-updated itself and started displaying MLAT data. Well after a bit of searching I found the answer. I have been feeding ADS-B data to Flightaware.com for a year now. I run their feeder software on my Raspberry Pi which is also running DUMP1090. In one of the recent updates to their piaware software, they added the ability to display MLAT but it was not enabled. On July 17th, I received an email blast from them announcing that MLAT processing was now active. That explained my I was getting MLAT tracking. The piaware software is feeding MLAT tracking back to DUMP1090 and VRS is picking up the resultant packets.

So, if you are interested in adding MLAT capability to your VRS display, I would recommend signing up with Flightaware.com (free) and utilizing their feeder software with MLAT enabled. So far I am very impressed at its functionality. Where I am located on Long Island, we suffer from a lot of helicopter traffic with the well-healed Wall Street folks flying from Manhattan to the Hampton's. I can now "see" those helicopters. In the past the only way I could identify a helicopter that buzzed my home was to list all aircraft and look for the one with the strongest signal level.

I'm running VRS on my PC with the radar input's of some friends...
I actually have 8 feeds showing on the VRS server...
Is there any way I can join those feeds into a MLAT server?

Yes, but you need to setup a complete client-server system using mutabilitys mlat software. Also the feeds need to be usable for mlat.

I've got a work-around, that takes the OLE/COM output from Planeplotter, which includes all MLAT'ed aircraft, and I'm feeding that into VRS as pseudo-ADSB type 3 messages on port 30003.

That's how I've got this SAAB 340 (non-ADSB) which has been MLAT'ed in Planeplotter to display in VRS.

Why not? The Planeplotter data is not being shared with anyone else, just internally on my PC.
