VRS on RPi3 stops showing planes

Post by RPiPilot » Sat Jul 15, 2017 10:50 am

Hi folks,

I'm running VRS on a RPi3 with Raspbian (uname -a: Linux pi 4.9.35-v7+ #1014 SMP Fri Jun 30 14:47:43 BST 2017 armv7l GNU/Linux). VRS is started by Cron (viewtopic.php?f=1&p=6410#p6410) and works in generally really pretty. But after a few days the map/website stops showing planes. I can refresh the website as often as I want to, but no planes. But there are planes in my range, dump1090 and fr24feed are showing some. Killing the process (top | grep "mono" -> get PID -> k -> %PID%) and restarting VRS by hand (mono VirtualRadar.exe -nogui) doesn't work - after this I even can't access the website anymore. I must restart the RPi to get VRS back to flight.

Do you have an idea why VRS stops showing planes after a few days? In the 'Aircraft Detail Lookup Log' I can see that there are no listed planes. I think VRS stops receiving data from dump1090, but I don't know why. :(

Workaround: Disabling and Re-enabling the receiver (Settings > Options > Receivers) works. Anyway to automate this every 3 or 6 hours?

By default VRS will drop a connection and reconnect it if it sees that there's been no data coming in on it for a minute or so. However, there's a bug in the release version of VRS, the upshot of which is that VRS doesn't always realise that a connection has timed out under Linux.

The bug is fixed in the current preview version (http://www.virtualradarserver.co.uk/Preview.aspx).

I've replaced the current version with the preview one. Will report if the issue still exists. ;)

Preview version did the trick. ;) Works fine, thanks for support!

Me again. I have to revoke my last post. This morning the map was clear, while fr24feed / dump1090 shows some planes... After disconnecting and re-connecting the receiver VRS was working like the days before. :(

I too am experiencing this "drop out" which is a little annoying as I have to restart the server every couple of days or so.
Tried to run the preview version but as I am on Debian7 the version of mono appears to be too old. I am going to have to upgrade to Debian8 or better...

I have a RaspberryPi on my roof with a colinear Antenna running dump1090 which feeds VirtualRadar on my Deb7 box. Usually rock solid.

Just try to deselect and re-select the receiver in the VRS WebAdmin. Deselect, save, re-select, save -> works in my case.
