AM/AMX Mix-up

Post by eastons » Wed Dec 17, 2014 6:31 am

Hi,

The Royal Flying Doctor Service in Australia uses AM*** callsigns for their flights; however, VRS incorrectly shows the routes for AMX*** (Aeromexico) for these flights' routes. For example, AM227 shows up as CJS-MEX, which is actually AMX227's route. Is it possible for VRS not to show these incorrect routes? Thanks.

I suspect the confusion is because AM is the valid IATA code for AeroMexico and AMX the valid ICAO code. AM227 and AMX227 are equivalent codes for the same route. VRS is able to match against both IATA and ICAO route codes, hence thinks your RFDS AM227 is the AeroMexico route.

That is what's happening, IATA have assigned the AM code to Aeromexico (http://www.iata.org/publications/Pages/code-search.aspx). As far as I understand it it's not unheard of for IATA to assign the same code to two entities, but only if there's no possibility of them being in the same bit of the world at the same time. However in this case it's Aeromexico and that's it, the RFDS have not been assigned the IATA code AM. I don't know where they're getting AM from, maybe it's some CASA (?) thing.

The best I could do is add a switch that would let you turn off lookups based on IATA codes. Strictly speaking if airlines followed the ICAO recommendations then they wouldn't be entering IATA codes into their transponders in the first place, from what I remember of the spec the callsign should be either the registration or the ICAO code and flight number. However they do ignore ICAO and do use IATA codes in callsigns, so switching IATA lookups off will have an impact on more than just RFDS flights.

Thanks for the reply, agw. I was listening to ATC today and it appears that the AM in their callsign is short for ambulance - so that's where it's come from.
