ADSB Exchange API

Postby Mac » Sun Jan 08, 2017 10:58 am

Anyone have any luck in pulling down a custom feed from the ADSB exchange API and feeding it into VRS?

Currently I'm pulling down the public ADSB exchange but that is 10,000+ aircraft and is too much data for me!

I've read the VRS documentation and can limit the API as per example
http://public-api.adsbexchange.com/Virt ... &fDstU=100

But how can I display this feed in VRS?
It doesn't seem to recognise it as a valid json receiver? :?: :?:

Maybe it's not possible, if so can someone confirm this so I can stop trying ☺️

Thanks

The link you've supplied is to their AircraftList.json, it is not a receiver feed. I think the intention there is to offer up the JSON for programs that want to consume the JSON directly? You won't be able to use it as a receiver.

I think ADSBExchange offer a range of intervals between the pushes of data to your VRS when you add a receiver from them (e.g. going by this page https://www.adsbexchange.com/data/ if you use port 32030 then you'll get data every 30 seconds instead of every second) but it'll still be all of the aircraft that they're tracking.

If someone wrote a plugin that could filter data by geographic area, we'd be happy to implement over at ADS-B Exchange. Yes, for now, it's all or nothing!

May I suggest to provide rough region filtered data (~ 2500km radius) for a few main regions (USA, Europe etc..) on dedicated ports?
That could cut the receiving load by 1/4 and would not be a huge load on the server side.

I'd love to, but no reliable method to do that right now, unless someone can write a plugin.

@dsfh2992,

Really great site that you are providing. I was wondering if I could feed my VRS using a "Compressed VRS" format connection from ADSBExchange rather than JSON to save on bandwidth. Or would that add to the CPU load on your side ?

Thanks

I think the format we tell everyone to send is already "compressed VRS", but it's possible we could change to JSON - is that what you meant?

I was referring to the "downstream" option as described in your "Feed Live Data to your own VRS Installation" section. These feeds are defined in JSON and I was curious if they could be turned to Compressed VRS to save on bandwidth.

Thanks.

They _might_ save on bandwidth, but would probably increase my CPU processing requirements, which are the current bottleneck on my end...

I have asked a question about this : https://forum.virtualradarserver.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1433
If anyone has that script or can make it, then this can be a solution for many.

I hope so.
