PlaneAlerter 2.0

Postby Dom2364 » Tue Oct 20, 2015 2:02 am

So I made PlaneAlerter 1.0 a while ago which is a program that alerts using email when a certain plane appears on a specific radar. I have been working on 1.0 for a while and I added a ton of stuff. Here's some of the main new features:
  • A Graphical User Interface!
  • Condition and Settings storage are now in json
  • Condition Editor GUI
  • Redesigned conditions
  • Added every property available as of 2.2.0
  • Redesigned email
  • Added map and aircraft pictures to email
  • Added the ability to alert on removal
  • Added a customisable alert timer so it doesn't spam alerts

That's pretty much what I've done to it, the download page as well as the virus scan results are below.

Update!

First of all, PlaneAlerter has been updated to fix an error when deleting conditions, which was causing condition creation to fail. Secondly, the link is now back up. Basically I managed to use all of my bandwidth by accidentally uploading 200GB to my website. That is now fixed so it all works now. If anyone finds more bugs tell me and I will try to fix them.

Hi

I get a program crash when I try to enter the URL for the AircraftList .json.

I tried various combinations, I don't have a domain so I tried http://127.0.0.1/virtualradar and so on to point to the json file but it crashes the program. I have even tried inputting the absolute network address, no go.
Can anyone tell me what goes in this field. I am simply running VRS as standard config on a stand alone PC.

There's something that's not obvious to me !

Thanks

Hi

did you try http://127.0.0.1/VirtualRadar/AircraftList.json

For me it works this way, running Virtual Radar Server and PlaneAlerter on the same Computer.

This software is great, it works as it should and it is very useful.

The only issue I have found is that because it is constantly downloading the AircraftList.json file every second or two, it is using a very large amount of bandwidth. It depends on how many aircraft are in the list at the time, so if you are downloading from one of the larger sites with lots of aircraft this can be quite considerable, I have found that even with just a couple of aircraft in the list the file is still around 50kb, it doesn't sound like much but when you are doing that roughly 40 times a minute it definitely adds up. I only found out after I was unexpectedly downloading several GB of data a day, then I tracked it to the PlanAlerter program.

I wonder if it would be possible to modify the program so that you can set your own refresh time, for me I would be happy to set it to check every couple of minutes, that would significantly reduce the amount of data being downloaded by this program.

Thanks

Stewie

New version! This update adds a few things:
  • An auto-sizing response buffer that improves the memory usage a lot
  • Emails now have the display name "PlaneAlerter Alerts"
  • Program waits one check for database data to populate in VRS before alerting
  • Refresh rate added to settings menu

Update is now on the website. You should be able to copy your conditions.json and settings.json over to the new version to keep your configuration by the way.

I have updated to the new version, however now I am constantly getting the following error message - Error parsing aircraftList.json response, increasing response buffer to 100000 bytes

I haven't changed another settings, and the AircraftList.json location is definitely correct.

Is there anything else I need to look at to get this working again?

Thanks on the updates, the checking interval setting will be very useful for me.

Regards

Stewie
